ZOEY
The air beside the altar shimmers, and a second later, Kellan materializes. Curses fall from his lips, and he throws his hands up in frustration when his gaze lands on me.
âYou have to be fucking kidding me.â
âHow was Eli?â
His gaze shifts away from me. âArabella was there.â
The news surprises me. âWhat?â
âHe was sick, and she was at the cabin.â
I frown. âBut they havenât been around each other in years.â
He drops down beside me onto the dusty wooden bench. âWe canât let this opportunity go to waste.â
âWhat opportunity?â
âGetting them back together.â
âKellââ My tone is wary.
He raises a finger to silence me. âI spoke to him.â
I roll my eyes. âNot this again.â
âSeriously. I jumped into his brain.â
âInto his brain?â
âHis consciousness, then. He saw me.â
I press my hand to his forehead. âI donât think ghosts can get sick, but are you sure you havenât caught something?â
âHa, ha. Very funny.â He slaps my hand away. âIf we can get Eli and Ari back on track, maybe thatâs how we get to move on.â
For a second, Iâm not sure Iâve heard him right. âMove on?â
âMove on. Go back.â He shrugs. âSame thing.â
âNo itâs not.â
âYou know you canât fight me and win. Just roll with it.â
Heâs not going to let this go. I can see it in his expression.
âThere is nowhere to go.â
âJust because we havenât gone anywhere yet doesnât mean thereâs nowhere to go.â
I tilt my head and study him. âAnd what if they arenât meant to be together?â
His laugh is derisive. âIf thereâs one thing that Iâm one hundred percent certain of, itâs that Eli and Arabella are meant to be together.â He rises from the bench. âAnd that will never change.â
Joining him, we leave the chapel and head toward the school. There are three large, white vans parked out front of the dorm building, and people carrying boxes inside.
I stop and stare. âWhatâs going on?â
Kellan halts beside me. âDoes the building look strange to you?â
My gaze roams over the structure. âItâs different.â
âSomeoneâs started renovations.â He frowns. âHow long have you been waiting for me in the chapel?â
âI donât know.â
âLetâs find out.â
We cross the grass toward the dorm building. The place is a hive of activity. Dust no longer covers every surface. Cleaners move from room to room while decorators paint the walls. It makes my heart ache when I walk into my old room and discover the artwork Eli had covered the walls with are all painted over. Kellan avoids the one he shared with Eli while alive. He hasnât stepped foot in there since his death. Instead, he prowls around the rest of the floors.
âAre they turning this place into a hotel?â
He shakes his head. âNo, I donât think so.â
âThen what are they doing?â
Kellan doesnât reply.
Leaving the dorms, we venture into the main part of the school. Thereâs more evidence of changes here. The classrooms are clean and smell of paint and disinfectant. New desks and chairs replace the old ones. The old wooden floors have been replaced. New blinds cover the windows.
